Putting the D.J.’s Record Collection On-Line

What do you do when you have a radio show, a large personal record collection, and you want your fans to be able to make on-line requests from your website?

Mark Edwards’ record collection has over 14,000+ songs, and Mark wanted to make it available to his fans on-line. One idea led to another, and now there is a complete solution where visitors can not only browse through Mark’s collection, but generate an on-line request to be played on the next show.

The original requirements called for over 400 individual web pages in order to display the entire collection.  Fortunately, Mark maintains the collection stored in a database on his PC.  From there it was a fairly simple matter to offload his data and build a database on his website.  The entire collection is presented via dynamic page generation techniques … utilizing a single web page template.

Visitors can browse throught the entire record collection, either by artist or song title.  Feel free to experiment with the “on-line request” link by selecting a song title or an artist.  All operations are fully functional.  Clicking the “Send To Sock Hop” button really will put your musical request into Mark’s next program.

Mark Edwards’ Sock Hop Saturday Night radio program is broadcast on Saturday nights from 8:00pm to midnight out of WLNG 92.1 FM, Sag Harbor, New York.  You can also listen over the internet via live365.com by visiting their website.  Where you see the “Find Stations That Play” search box, type in “WLNG” and click the "GO" button.  On the next display click the yellow and black speaker button to launch an audio player.

The Record Collection solution was provided by using scripting software.  The scripts interact with a database of 14,000+ song titles providing an easy-to-use, single source solution to generating dynamic web pages.
